Making Decorative Wall Crosses At Home

By Lana Bray

Whether one is a religious person or just simply an artist who has a knack for design, he will definitely like to have wall crosses for his home. Now one may opt to buy a decorative wall cross in the store downtown but that would be more costly and not as fun as making one at home. So if he would want to have some artistic fun and save money at the same time, then learn how to make a wall cross with this guide.

Now the first thing to do would be to shop for all the necessary materials in the local woodwork store. The things that one will be needing are some old newspapers, two small planks of wood, a small hand saw, and some spray paint that may come in different colors. All the other decorations and extra things will come later when the cross has been made.

The first step in whole process would be to connect the two wooden planks together in order to make the wood cross. To do this, cut a portion of the longer plank so that the smaller plank can fit inside. In order to stick it, either use some wood glue or tie the middle with an old looking rope.

Lay the cross on to the newspaper and start spraying it with some spray paint. One should use majestic colors like gold or silver when painting the cross. From there, leave it to dry and go get some decorations.

The next part will be a rather free flowing stage where the artist will be allowed to express his artistic talents. In this stage, he will be choosing which accessories and decorations he would want to put on the cross. He may choose from a variety of accessories like beads, glass, or anything that he can grab his hands on that will look really nice on the wooden cross.

When he has conceptualized everything, then he should start pasting the decorations on to the cross using some super glue. Now sometimes super glue is not as effective so another alternative to that would be to use wood glue because this type of glue works better with wood. Now one must remember to always be very careful with glues like these because they can harm the skin.

When everything has already been pasted, then the last step would be to put a second layer of paint so that the glue stains will not be obvious. Although one should put a second layer of paint, he should always remember that he should only put a thin layer. If he puts too much, then the decorations will not be seen anymore.

So basically, those are the steps that one should take when trying to make decorative wall crosses for his house. Now if one would not want to deal with connecting the wooden planks together, an alternative to that would be to buy a cross in a store and just decorate it at home. In any case, the finished product will pretty much be the same.
