The Marine Corps League gained congressional approval under Title 36 of the United States Code in 1937 under the stewardship of Commandant Lejeune John. This happened during the 75th congress and under the guidance of President Roosevelt. It is supposed to deal with issues affecting veterans and Marines in active national service.
The mission of this organization is to bring together members in fellowship and camaraderie with the aim of promoting the interests of veterans and preserving their traditions. It also aims at banding together different generations including the serving and those honorably discharged. The idea is to promote ideals that define America which are democracy and freedom.
The activities of MCL target veterans, current Marines, their dependents, families, windows and orphans. Their voluntary support to these members is unlimited and diverse to meet different needs. Another central focus for the group is promoting and perpetuating the history and honor of marine traditions. They mark important occasions with honor and ensure that anniversaries are marked. Their focus on past, present and future marines has raised its profile and widened its influence.
In keeping alive the traditions of Marines, they run various programs aimed at promoting and honoring their tradition and spirit. The Injured Marines program aims at helping those who are wounded in various hospitals across the country. There are naval and army hospitals in Virginia, Maryland, Washington and Texas. There is a Marine 4-life and Injured Marine Support program that mentors and supports those who are transitioning.
Youth programs target the younger generation who will become future marines. Their activities include programs that instill the core values of marines in the young generation. High and elementary school students have the physical fitness program which runs alongside the Boy Scouts of America. There is a scholarship fund for those interested in education as well as the toys for tots initiative.
MCL has placed the interests of veterans high among their priorities. The organization scrutinizes and shapes any legislation that will affect marines and military activity. Veterans have a central organization with a national outlook to address their issues and others that are of national concern. Active marines are served under the Veterans Service Officer Program. Volunteer work by members is offered in VA hospitals across the country.
