It's always a blast to discover a terrific novel before anyone else. It's like finding a treasure. I guess I'm a treasure hunter at heart, because finding a good read is what keeps me going. You know how darn persnickety I can be about books.
I'm thrilled to recommend the novel Some Glad Morning by Gary C. Horton. Without a doubt it is the best novel I have read this year, perhaps the best I have read in many years. It's about a young man fighting overwhelming odds for love. But it's more than a love story. It will melt your heart, touch you in so many ways and leave you wishing and hoping and thinking.
The characters are so richly drawn they will linger in your memory for a long time. They feel real. You'll care for them like friends and family. This is a tribute to the amazing skill of Mr. Horton. Read Some Glad Morning and I promise you'll want to tell others about it.
The hero is Ransom MacTavish, a poor farm boy from South Carolina, who joins the Army to earn cash for his destitute family. It's the spring of 1918 and Ransom is quickly sent to France to fight in World War I. An assault across no man's land goes horribly wrong and Ransom is trapped in a shell hole with a dying officer.
The officer has with him letters from his fiance, a Charleston lady named Elizabeth. The officer's dying wish is to hear her letters read to him. In the most heart wrenching scene I have ever known, Ransom reads to the young man as he dies. Later, trapped for days alone in no man's land, Ransom finds comfort in reading the letters and falls in love with Elizabeth.
Although they are socially worlds apart, Ransom comes home to pursue Elizabeth. He has nothing and she is a Charleston aristocrat. Soon he must contend with a wealthy competing suitor, racism, soul crushing poverty and relentless stupidity.
But Ransom endures and with the help of a crotchety hermit and the steadfast courage of a young pregnant woman on the run, Ransom is made stronger by his trials. He comes to understand his heart and finds the courage to love deeply.
Some Glad Morning ended on such a resounding beat I wanted to cheer. Read Some Glad Morning and I bet you'll think to yourself, 'This would make a great movie.' It's not a movie yet, but it has been made into an audio book performed exquisitely by the notable voice actress Janet Metzer. Read Some Glad Morning. You'll love it.
