The History Of Joshua As Told In The Bible

By Debra Cooley

The Old Testament of the Bible tells the history of Joshua as the head of the Israelites. He was borne in Egypt and his father was called Nun. At the time, Moses was leading the Israelites.

Initially when he was borne, he was called Hosea and his father was called Nun. However Moses who was the leader of the Israelites then changed his name to Joshua. This name means the Lord is Salvation. This was an indication that he was true savant of God.

In order to punish the Jews who did not have believe in the Lord, the Jews of that generation were sent to the wilderness by God for forty years. The life in the wilderness was harsh and frustrating. At some point, the other Israelites started blaming Mosses for having taken them out from Egypt to the wilderness were they were suffering. Due to the harsh conditions which prevailed in the wilderness, all the other people who did not believe in God died. Only Caleb and him remained alive.

Thereafter Moses did and Joshua took over the leadership of the Israelites. One of the reasons why he was chosen is because of his true faithfulness to God. He led the Jews for twenty eight years until they reached the Promised Land. He was able to conquer Jericho and also to fight several battles with the help of God. Before conquering Jericho, God had sent him to Jericho in company of Caleb.

He took over the leadership of the Jewish after the death of Moses for twenty eight years. During his tenure as the leader of the Jew, he fought many battles and followed the instructions of God to the latter. He One of the battles concurred by Joshua was that one of Jericho.

They started by going round the city for six circles each day for six days. On the day seven before invading, they went round seven times then shouted. Thereafter, the wall was destroyed and the city was destroyed with exception of Rehab and her family members.

The army was then able to cross the river without any interference. This miracle was a manifestation of the power of God. At the city of Jericho, the soldiers went round the city six rounds for six days as instructed by God.

It is also necessary to note that he made some mistakes. God had instructed them not to make any covenant or to sign any treaty; however he signed a peace treaty with the people of Gibeon which was against Gods wish. The history of Joshua ends when he died at the age of 110 years. However, it teaches us that believing in God and having faith in him pays. Joshua was able to come from a humble background of being a servant, to one of the strongest leaders of Israelites who took them to the land which they were promised.
